Thomas Barnett

Thomas was born about 1717. [According to a source, Thomas was the son of William and Mary and was baptised at Bradfield, Berks, on April 24, 1717, and was third of their eleven children.]

The first confirmed reference to him is found in the marriage bonds and allegations that come under the jurisdiction of Sarum which covered Berkshire. A licence was granted for Thomas Barnett of Remenham, Berkshire and Anne Newbury, also of Remenham, Berkshire, to marry at Reading St Lawrence on April 27, 1753.

The next mention is found in the parish records at Remenham, Berks.

On May 6, 1756 Anne, the daughter of Thomas and Anne Barnet (who was privately Baptized the foregoing Sunday) was Buried.

The next record was also in the Remenham parish register:

At the front of the Remenham parish register that commenced in 1789 is the note:

The Register of the Parish of Remenham in the County
Of Berks and Diocese of Sarum - August the 31st 1789

John Nicholl B. D. Rector
Thomas Barnet }Church Wardens
Joseph Stevens }

The Hon’ble Shute Barrington Bishop of the said Diocese
Onslow D. D. Archdeacon

Thus we learn that Thomas was a respected member of his community, fulfilling the role of church warden. This is a role he continued play over the years right up until shortly before his death.

He died on December 26th, 1803 in Remenham, Berkshire, aged 85 years, and was buried on December 31, 1803 in the Remenham Churchyard. His headstone reads:In memory of
Thomas Barnett
who died Dec. 26th 1803
in the 86 year of his age

Ann, the wife of Thomas, was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Newbury. She was baptised on March 15, 1719 at Remenham and died on November 19, 1801 at the age of 83. Like Thomas, she is buried at Remenham. Her headstone reads:

In memory of
Ann, wife of
Thomas Barnett
who died 19th Nov 1801
in the 84th year
of her age

Ann was buried on November 23, 1801 and a note in the burial register states that she was the wife of Thomas senior.

Thomas and Ann had two children:

  1. a daughter Ann, and
  2. a son Thomas.

It can be summised that Ann only lived a short time given the note in the Remenham parish register noting her burial. There is no entry in the Parish Register for her baptism, however it was noted against her burial that she had been baptised on the foregoing Sunday, May 2. She was buried on May 6, 1756 at Remenham.

St Nicholas, Remenham
