2.8.5 Susan Elizabeth Barnett

Susan Elizabeth Barnett was the fifth child and third daughter of William Barnett and Ann Matthews. She was born about 1834 at Saunderton, Buckinghamshire.
At the time of the 1841 census, she was 5 years old and living with his family at Saunderton Grange, Saunderton, Bucks. In 1851, 1861 and 1871 she was living with her parents in Saunderton. By 1881, both parents were dead, and Susan was living with her unmarried brother, William, at Saunderton Grange, Saunderton.
At the time of the 1901 census, Susan was living with her older widowed sister, Frances, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. She was 65 and her occupation was listed as Secretary Tramp Mission. The Tramp Mission is mentioned in a number of family Wills.
Susan died in Cheltenham on January 26, 1905, aged 70. Her address at the time of her death was 10 Albert Place, Chetenham. Probate was granted on February 11, 1905 at Gloucester to Eva May Barnett, the daughter of her cousin Thomas Barnett, and Beatrice Jane Matthews. The value of her estate was £271 0s 1d.

This is the last Will and testament of me Susan Elizabeth Barnett of 10 Albert Place, Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester Spinster. I direct payment of all my just debts funeral and Testamentary expenses as soon as may be convenient after my decease. I bequeath to my Niece Frances Barnett of Spring Gardens, Bourne End, near Maidenhead, only daughter of my later Brother Benjamin Barnett, the sum of Ten pounds free of duty. I bequeath to my Cousin Gertrude Sampson daughter of the late Henry Sampson, the sum of Ten pounds free of duty. I bequeath to my Niece Susan Janet Barnett, eldest daughter of my Brother Thomas Barnett of Glen House 60 Newbridge Road, Bath, my gold watch and seal and one ring. I bequeath the large Bookshelves to the Tramp Mission for the use of the Secretary for the time being. I bequeath my gold chain and the remainder of my Furniture and my wearing apparel to my second Cousin Eva May Barnett and I bequeath all the Residue of my Estate including Plate equally between my Brother the said Thomas Barnett and my Cousin the said Eva May Barnett. And I appoint the said Eva May Barnett sole Executrix. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fourteenth day of August One thousand nine hundred and two.

This is a second Codicil to my Will. I bequeath to my Sister-in-law Selina Eccleston Widow and her daughter Frances Mary Eva Barnett (in the Will called Frances Barnett) of Spring Gardens Bourne End near Maidenhead and monies that may be in the Post Office Savings Bank share and share alike or if either of them should die in my lifetime her share to go to the survivor. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of July 1903.

This is a third Codicil to my Will. I appoint Beatrice Jane Matthews of Blanway House, Jersey Avenue Hewlett Road Cheltenham Spinster to be joint Executrix of my Will and Codicils with Eva May Barnett and I bequeath to the said Beatrice Jane Matthews Fifteen Pounds free of duty and my three volumes of Scotts Bible Commentary and the two volumes of my new Universal Etymological Technological and pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language. My Brother Thomas Barnett having died his half share of the residue to go to his wife and children equally except as to Ten pounds thereof which I bequeath to the said Eva May Barnett in consideration of Mrs Barnett having received that amount from me since her husbands death. In all other respects I confirm my said Will and two previous Codicils. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this                 day of          One thousand nine hundred and four.

On the 11th day of February 1905 Probate of this Will and three Codicils, the third Codicil bearing date the ----- day of ----- 1904 but in fact executed on the 2nd day of November 1904 was granted to Eva May Barnett and Beatrice Jane Matthews the Executrixes.
