2.4.4.1.1 James Arthur Pollock
[Last amended: March 28, 2004]
James Arthur Pollock was the first child of Mary Barnett and James "Jim" Pollock. He was born on October 9, 1876. He was named after his father and Uncle Arthur.
James began teaching in Providence Township while still in his teens, hoping at first that he could earn enough money to study law, but decided to make teaching his profession instead. He taught in the Sylvania school system for a while and was Superintendent there from 1897 to 1904. He interrupted his career to further his own education, attending Ohio State University, Cornell and the University of Chicago. He returned to teaching where he remained except for a four year period where he tried his hand selling insurance. Teaching was his profession of choice.
James married Hazel L Orr probably around 1910 or 1911.
The following appeared in the 1921 edition of the Waite High School year book, Purple and Gold:

To Mr. Pollock
This might be the creed of our principal - to smile, and make the world a better, happier place in which to live. We do not think of Mr. Pollock as the principal of Waite High; we do not think of him as an autocrat to be approached on bended knee - we cannot think of him as that - but always do we regard him as the man, who, by his cheery, hearty greeting and optimistic advise, chases away the engulfing gloom and makes us see a brighter lining on the dark cloud. Mr. Pollock has absolute faith in Waite. He is ever ready to extend a helping hand to the pupils under him. He has kept throughout his position as principal, a personal touch - a fatherly touch with all the students. And with the intimate facts that he has gathered in the many heart-to-heart talks that he has had with his pupils, he knows that he can place explicit trust in them. And in thhis he is not mistaken. By his ready smile; his cheerful, uplifting conversations with his students, he has endeared himself in their hearts. Waite would not be Waite without Mr. Pollock. by his sincere regard and love for his pupils, he has made school life a time of real enjoyment. the drudgery has been taken away. And so, we cannot think of Waite or any of its organizations and interests without thinking of Mr. pollock, who, by his readiness to give to us all that he has, makes our school life one that in later years will bring back to us many sweet and happy memories. |
James retired in 1947. He had been having problems with his heart and died of a coronary while shoveling a late winter's snow from his front walk on March 10, 1949. He was aged 72 years. He was buried in the Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery on March 12.
Hazel Orr was born on February 14, 1886. She, too, was a school teacher and she met James when she was taking her teaching exams. James was the County State School Examiner for some of his career. She died on December 19, 1967, aged 81 years. She was buried in the Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery on December 21.
An obituary for Hazel was attached to her cemetery record and read:
