2.4.4.1 Mary Barnett

Mary Barnett was the first child of James Barnett and Eliza Collins. She was born on April 12, 1853 in Medina County, Ohio. She was a twin of Frank.

Mary married James "Jim" Pollock on November 25, 1875. Jim was the fifth child and oldest son of John Pollock and Esther Hunstead. He was born on September 2, 1847 in Providence Township, Lucas County, Ohio.

Jim had assumed the role of "man of the household" for his family at age 15 following the death of his father in 1862. His family lived in a clapboard house facing Bailey Road. It was to this house that Mary went on her marriage. All of Jim and Mary's children were born in this house.

"We often heard stories of the old log home with the cracks and crevices in the walls which allowed the rats through as well as the cold air to blow in. The floors were so crooked that the doors would not close properly."

Jim was clerk for Providence Township in 1873-74 and again in 1886.

In about 1906 Jim and Mary moved into a new house, built in front of the old clapboard one, facing Bailey Road. The old house was torn down although the lilac bush that grew by its door still thrives.

Mary died on August 1, 1921, aged 68. She is buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Ohio.

Jim died on October 5, 1926, aged 79. According to Mary Williams, a descendant of Jim and Mary, cause of death was an influenza type illness. Jim is buried beside his wife, Mary, in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery.
