Leslie Stephen Smith was the first child born to Sydney James Smith and Nora Silver Wright. He was born in England in 1905.

He emmigrated to New Zealand with his parents sometime before the birth of his sister, Molly, in 1910.

Stephen married Sylvan Karua Peggler on March 9, 1937 and they had two children:

Leslie changed his family name to Stephen-Smith.

Sylvan Karua Pegler was born on April 17, 1911.
