Emily Smith was the second of the eleven children born to Mary "Polly" Hobbs and Stephen Smith. She was born at Hambleden, Bucks, on August 1, 1871. She was baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Hambleden, on October 3, 1871.

At the time of the 1901 census Emily was living at Bourne End, Wooburn, with her mother and other family members. She was 29 years old and no occupation was listed.

Madeline died on June 6, 1950 in England.
