2.1.6 Peter Barnett

[Last amended: September 30, 2005]

Peter Barnett was the third son and sixth child of Thomas Barnett and Caroline Bassigny. He was born in Shiplake, Oxfordshire and baptised there on April 16, 1820.

Like his father before him, Peter was a bailiff. This is documented in the Checkendon Parish Register against the baptism entries for his daughters Sarah and Jane.

Peter married Martha Martin on May 7, 1843 at Reading St Lawrence. Peter signed but Martha made her mark. Witnesses were Henry Russell and Emma Bennett. At the time of their marriage, Peter was a servant residing at Caversham, Oxon; Martha was residing at Abbey Brook.

At the time of the 1851 census, Peter and Martha were living in Checkendon, Oxfordshire.

Martha Martin was born in South Moreton, Berkshire in 1820. She was the first surviving child of the five born to William Martin, a labourer, and Ann Herbert. Her father died in 1824 leaving her widowed mother with two infants to raise on her own.

Children of Peter Barnett and Martha Martin:

2.1.6.1    Thomas Barnett born 1843
2.1.6.2 Harriet Barnett born 1845
2.1.6.3 Emma Barnett born about 1847
2.1.6.4 Sarah Barnett born 1849
2.1.6.5 Jane Barnett born 1851

[Note: January 2003. The family disappeared after the 1851 census. It appears likely that they emmigrated but where remains a mystery.]
